About The TMA
Founded in 1992, following the creation of NHS Trusts, The Transport Management Association of the NHS was formed to provide a forum for exchanging views, airing concerns and giving mutual support in areas of transport and fleet management within the Health Service.
The needs of such an Association are based on many factors, not least because the management of National Health Service transport fleets has become increasingly complex. Health & Safety legislation and European Union Directives being just two of the many challenges facing all involved in transport. Non-compliance is not an option. Fleet Management is capital intensive and there are many technical and financial aspects of the service when competence must be demonstrated.
The frequent NHS restructuring and reorganisations that have to be faced lead to a constant change in the make up and direction of the NHS. The TMA ethos has always been “Improve Care, Meet Targets and Control Costs”.

Agenda for Change and The Working Time Directive have created new challenges for us to face when staffing services. This again highlights the fact that the development of appropriate knowledge, skills and the sharing of information between transport professionals in the NHS are more important than ever.
To be competent and proficient at managing a commercial transport or car fleet, individuals not only require management skills, but also a sound understanding of the unique combination of those skills and techniques which characterise the job of transport managers and car fleet managers and administrators.
The Transport Management Association is a source of knowledge and reference on all matters concerning the management of NHS fleets.
